Science for All

Some examples of technologies and companies that are using biotechnology to benefit underprivileged communities:

Affordable vaccines: Many underprivileged communities have limited access to vaccines, which can lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases. Biotechnology companies, such as GSK and Merck, are working to develop affordable vaccines that can be distributed amongst these communities for less than $5 USD a dose.

Solar energy: Solar energy can provide a clean and reliable source of electricity for underprivileged communities, but the cost of photovoltaic panels can be prohibitively expensive. Companies like d.light and Off Grid Electric by ZOLA Electric are using biotechnology to develop affordable solar energy solutions.

Water treatment: Lack of access to clean water is a major issue in many underprivileged communities, and biotechnology can be used to develop affordable water treatment solutions. Companies like WaterHealth International and Pure Technologies (a Xylem brand) are using biotechnology to provide clean water to those who need it most.

Sustainable agriculture: Many communities rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, but traditional farming practices can be environmentally damaging and unsustainable. Biotechnology can be used to develop sustainable agriculture practices that are more efficient and environmentally friendly. Companies like One Acre Fund and RootWave (Ubiqutek Ltd) are using biotechnology to improve the sustainability of agriculture.

Renewable fuels: Fossil fuels contribute to climate change and air pollution, which disproportionately affects underprivileged communities. Biotechnology can be used to develop renewable fuels, such as biofuels, that are more environmentally friendly. Companies like LanzaTech and Amyris are using biotechnology to develop renewable fuels that can be used to power vehicles and homes in underprivileged communities.
