Company of the week: Newlight Technologies, Inc.

The environmental impact of our daily consumption is enormous, and plastic waste is undeniably a substantial part of the problem. Traditional plastics, made from fossil fuels, linger in our environment for centuries and contribute to a myriad of environmental issues.

Falling in line with last week’s post on Rubi Laboratories, we are shining the spotlight on Newlight Technologies, Inc. 🌍

Operating since 2003 and inspired by the ocean's natural ability to synthesize materials, Newlight harnessed a cutting-edge biotechnological process using microorganisms that consume greenhouse gases to produce a biopolymer called AirCarbon, otherwise known as Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). This is not your average plastic; it's a high-performance, biodegradable material created directly from captured carbon emissions!

Through strategic collaborations with major industry players like:

IBM
- To utilize blockchain technology for the tracking and certification of AirCarbon, ensuring transparency in the carbon footprint and the product's journey from source to market.

Dell Technologies
- To produce packaging trays made from AirCarbon for some of the company's laptop series.

Vinmar International
- To purchase, market, and sell AirCarbon products, providing Newlight with a significant commercial outlet for its material.

Procter & Gamble
- To explore the use of AirCarbon in certain applications, given P&G's interest in sustainable packaging alternatives.

IKEA
- to integrate AirCarbon into IKEA's product range, aligning with IKEA's sustainability goals.

…Newlight is spearheading the drive to reduce our carbon footprint and bring us closer to a circular economy.

Their packaging material is also FDA approved for food contact! From everyday items like straws and cutlery to sophisticated products in fashion and electronics, this material brings sustainability without compromising quality.

We send a huge thank you to the founders Mark Herrema and Kenton Kimmel along with the whole Newlight Technologies, Inc. team for what you do! ♻️🙏
